STEAM in South Africa

Our team has decided to fund and mentor a team in South Africa. Through a parent, the team has been organized and set up. Through this, we hope to spread the reach of STEAM to children who do not have similar access to us.

After we started STEAM in South Africa, we realized that there are other places that don't get a chance to be able to compete or don't have the proper sources surrounding them. We know as much as we'd like to, we can't help everyone, but we've made it our mission to help as much as possible. This season we decided along with mentoring overseas, we wanted to make a change in our community, right where we are. We have started a FIRST Team right here in Michigan. Every Saturday, we invite them over and mentor them in every aspect of FIRST, using fun interactive activites.

Meeting with the Governor

As an all-girls team, one of our main goals has been to promote equality in STEAM. We have already started a online interview series on our YouTube channel called Spark Plug. But during this process, we realized how important it is to enligthen ourselves in other peoples' viewpoints. Our member, Varsha, was provided the oppurtunity to meet with Governor Whitmer, in November 2021, to discuss about this topic and it what was has it been impacted us. On top of this, the duo discussed about women in high education such as college and jobs.

For this project, we realized we needed to inform others about the oppurtunity they have in the near future or even now to get started with. To do this, we reached out to multiple students by passing out flyers in our neighborhoods, using social media, and partnering up with schools within the Troy School District to be able to achieve this goal.

From here we spent most of the summer of 2021 giving a crash course of FIRST to a group of students from 3rd to 6th.

Bake Sale

Our team has learnt that actions speak louder than words. After starting our organization in South Africa, we noticed a chain reaction on how this had a positive effect. Thus, our team decided to support the Astrea Lesbian Foundation to help another underepersenated group within STEAM.

In order to fundraise for this group, our team held a bake sale to donate all earnings to them. To complete this, we sold home made cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and many other goodies!
